How to measure

Here you'll find all the information you need to ensure you measure accurately for your made to measure electric blinds

Measuring for made to measure electric blinds can be a daunting task for a DIY novice as measuring incorrectly could leave you with a blind that doesn’t fit your window... nightmare! But don’t worry, it’s actually quite simple when you know where to measure and if you take care doing so.

Our step by step guide & video below outline everything you need to know from the correct tools to use through to where to measure.

Always use a Steel Tape Measure

Use a steel tape measure

It is imperative that you use a steel tape measure and not a fabric tape measure as these can stretch & provide inaccurate measurements.

Measure to the nearest mm

We ask you to input your measurements in centimetres, but it is important that you measure to the nearest millimetre to get the most accurate results. For example if your width measures at 1423mm and the drop is 978mm then you would order the size 142.3cm x 97.8cm.

Remember that our friendly team are here to help with any queries, so if you're unsure just get in touch and we'll be happy to assist to make sure you get the right size blind.

Firstly decide whether you are going to fit your blind inside or outside of the recess.

Are you fitting inside or outside of the recess

If you are fitting inside the recess...

  • Take wall to wall measurements in 3 places for both the width & drop.
  • For the width, take your measurements at the top, middle & bottom of the opening & note down the smallest.
  • For the drop, measure on the left, middle & right again noting down the smallest size.

By working with the smallest measurements this ensures that the blind will fit within your reveal. It is important to note down your sizes with no reductions as we will make a small reduction to ensure the blind fits into this space for you.

If you are fitting outside the recess...

Work out the entire space that you would like to cover. Ensure that you leave adequate space above the recess for fitting the brackets & the tube. Another factor to consider with roller blinds is that the fabric width is approximately 3.5cm narrower than the total blind size (outer bracket to outer bracket). Neglecting this consideration could result in the fabric being narrower than your opening & therefore not covering the reveal.

When placing your order...

You will need to specify whether your measurements are taken inside or outside the recess. If you have measured inside the recess select "Recess Fitting. If you have measured outside the recess select "Blind Size"

Alternatively you can choose to give us the size you would like the actual fabric part of the blind to be, but do remember that the total width of the finished product will be bigger than this as it will include the brackets. To do this select "Fabric Size" from the drop down box.

What kind of measurement are you providing?

This information is crucial as it affects the finished size of your blind.

  • If you provide us with a Blind Size measurement then we will make your blind to this exact size (bracket to bracket) with no reductions on the width.
  • If you provide us with a Recess Fitting measurement then we will make a small reduction on the width to give you a tiny amount of manoeuvring space when fitting the blind.

This reduction varies depending on the product:

Roller Blinds = 10mm reduction when made in a luxury cassette, 5mm without.

Wood Venetian Blinds = 10mm reduction.

Please Note

With any roller blind there will be a difference of 3.5cm between the total blind size (outer bracket to outer bracket) & the width of the fabric. This is due to the size of the motor end, the brackets & the fact that the fabric can not run fully to the ends of the tube as it would get caught & frayed during operation.
